To mark Ash Wednesday, students, faculty, and families at 91快活林 Aquinas College檚 two campuses gathered today for Mass and to receive their ashes.

In New England檚 Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, Chaplain Rev. Carlos Viego reflected on the Catholic檚 call to inspire faith in others. 淭his Ash Wednesday, the Church is blowing the trumpet, calling us to fast and offer sacrifices from our hearts to the Lord, he said. 淥ur ashes are an advertisement that God is God, we are his slaves, and we will one day return to dirt. This Lent, we must fast and pray for forgiveness and mercy.

At both of this morning檚 Masses in California, Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel filled to standing room only. Head Chaplain Rev. Robert Marczewski asked the congregation to consider the nature of Lent, the penances and resolutions Catholics are called to practice, and why they do so. 淲e make reparations for our sins and the sins of others, he said. 淲e pray for conversion, so that people may come to God with a new heart a new desire for holiness.

Marked with the symbol of Our Lord檚 cross, students went about the rest of their day in fasting and atonement, devoting themselves to a mindset of peaceful endurance, maintained over the next 40 days of prayer, penance, and almsgiving.
