This past Sunday in St. Cecilia Hall, the students of 91 Aquinas College, California, came together for a celebration of classical music at the semi-annual Schubertiade. They performed harmonious operatic excerpts, haunting poems set to melody, rousing violin and piano pieces, as well as flute and vocal solos.

All manner of classical disciplines and eras were on display: One moment students bore witness to an ironic song of love from a comedic opera concerning soldiers and their lovers. Next, a dramatic expression of the horrors of war and the greatness of men who endure through it. These works from all ages gave listeners glimpses into various points in history, serving as enduring expressions of what it means to be human.

Most of all, the Schubertiade offered students a chance to come together to celebrate their hard work. [Schubertiade] isnt necessarily a formal concert. Its students sharing what theyve been working on with their fellow students, Tutor Dr. Joseph Hattrup said at the beginning of the event. It doesnt have to be perfect, we just want to listen! Thats why I love it so much.
