Students gathered around the flagpole at 91快活林 Aquinas College, New England, on Saturday for the annual Freshmen-Junior River Day. This was the Junior Class檚 moment to welcome the new freshmen, and the Class of 2030檚 opportunity to glean some upperclassman wisdom while enjoying a day of kayaking and socializing.

Eager students packed into cars, then headed down to the Connecticut River. While the day had dawned cloudy, by afternoon the sun was shining and temperatures were rising, while a cool breeze reminded everyone of the coming autumn. Soft, healthy grass rimmed by trees made for a pleasant setting, while the glassy river beckoned students to take a swim.

Kayaking

Once kayaks were unloaded, freshmen and juniors set off on a beautiful voyage upriver, kayaking past sun-kissed trees and quaint New England houses. On shore, those not playing a pick-up sport enjoyed listening to music, conversing with friends, and basking in the sun.

As afternoon melted into evening, students gathered around the grill for burgers and potato chips, eager to refuel after a few energetic hours. But the day wasn檛 over yet after the group packed up the food and kayaks, everyone headed down to the pond for a bonfire and s檓ores. Freshmen and juniors alike sang campfire songs and bonded over the intimate setting, the newcomers excited for the years ahead while juniors reflected on the years behind them.

Volleyball

One junior, Rafael Martins, recalled his River Day two years ago: 淚檇 never gone kayaking or had s檓ores before, but it made me feel welcomed. I wanted to do the same thing for the freshmen.

As the sky began to swell with stars, and the evening quieted, students made their way back to their residence halls. 淚t was so much fun! exclaimed Laja Hapsburg (30), echoing the sentiments of the rest of her class.
