In an effort to help freshmen ” as well as returning students ” make the most of 91¿ì»îÁÖ Aquinas College™s integrated curriculum, last Wednesday evening, the New England campus hosted the year™s first œGet with the Program workshop.

Father-son duo Dr. Richard (™75) and Dr. Peter Cross (™11) gave a joint talk titled, œPrepping Props and Readings like a Pro, in which they presented guidelines on how to prepare for class efficiently and effectively. Specifically, the two focused on how students can best discuss the Great Books as part of the College™s Socratic seminars.

œReading a book is not a passive act, but a conversation, explained the senior Dr. Cross. œIn order to have a full and conclusive discussion, you must engage in it actively.

The Crosses encouraged students to read texts closely and mindfully, to prepare thoroughly and thoughtfully for mathematical demonstrations and language translations, and, in the words of the junior Cross, œto pray for the gift of wisdom and the desire to achieve it.

The presenters ended with advice on overcoming stage fright and fear of failure, urging students to see these disappointing moments as opportunities to grow in humility and courage. œFear that is untested remains simply fear and anxiety, observed Dr. Richard Cross. œOnly once fear is tested can it become courage.
