After their afternoon Euclid discussion, students on the New England High School Summer Program hurried to the dorms to change for the afternoon activities. On the athletic field, the programmers divided into two teams according to class section. They scrambled with spoons during the egg relay and hopped over teammates for the human log race, fighting to be first at the finish line! A wild game called Steal the Bacon new to the Summer Program was introduced and enthusiastically tested before giving way to a riotous kayak relay race.

Playing Volleyball

Suddenly, as the students backs were turned for the next set of game instructions, the prefects ambushed them from behind with volleys of water balloons! Chaos broke loose as students armed themselves for a full-blown water balloon free-for-all.

Soaking wet and smiling, everyone ran back up the hill to shower and change before dinner. Once settled in the dining hall in dry clothes, the refreshed students and prefects heartily enjoyed a dinner of homemade pizza. After a morning devoted to the Discussion Method, it was small surprise to stumble across a packed dinner table where students were deep in TAC-style debate over the merits and morals of pineapple as a pizza topping.

Reading the Classics

Following dinner, it was back to the library, where prefect Antonia Fitzpatrick (27) gave a quick talk to the students on how to prepare well for classes. 淗ere, study is not just about getting through assignments, she said, 渂ut about seeking to really enjoy what you learn. With this encouragement, students quietly settled down to read Plato檚 Euthyphro and prepare the first three of Euclid檚 propositions for demonstration the next day. After demonstrating the first prop of Book I on the board for his study group, Joe F. remarked, 淚檓 excited for Euclid tomorrow, and I檓 really curious how different people will present their props. It檚 going to be fun!

Dancing and Milkshakes

Later, students and prefects gathered at the coffee shop in St. Frassati Student Center for milkshakes and games. The room hummed with laughter and conversation, interspersed with the click of pool cues and the prefects calling out milkshake flavors from the bar. Groups of students played board games and card games, talked over Euclid props, and competed in ice hockey and Jenga. Inspired by the music playing on the speakers in the background, a few students started swing dancing, and soon the floor was covered with others following suit.

Students were sorry to see the evening end, but it came to a peaceful and prayerful close with the Rosary before returning to the dorms for club sandwiches and conversation.

Check back with the Summer Blog later today to read about one of the Summer Program檚 most unique experiences, as the students demonstrate their first Euclidean propositions!
