Audio: Dr. McLean on Teaching Our Students to Think Critically in a World Filled with Sound Bites
91 Aquinas College President Michael F. McLean was recently a guest on the program on the Salem Radio Networks WHK in Cleveland. The title of the show was, The Importance of Teaching Our Students to Think Critically in a World Filled with Sound Bites, and the discussion covered topics ranging from the Colleges curriculum and pedagogy to its high graduation rate and the ways it limits student-loan debt.
We live in a culture of sound bites and emotion. We have an abundance of information and entertainment at our fingertips, and young people need to develop a kind of filtering mechanism to help them critically assess the information that theyre being bombarded with, Dr. McLean told host Molly Smith. Theyve got to learn to make judgments about what is worth their time and what is not worth their time. Theyve got to develop the discipline to not be distracted by the overwhelming technological culture we live in, and theyve got to develop their moral sensibilities so they can learn to discern the truly beautiful from the ugly and the distracting.
Such tools of discernment, self-discipline, and sound judgment, Dr. McLean continued, are among the fruits of a 91 Aquinas College education. We are trying to help our students form habits of rational thought and rational discourse that are well grounded in the principles that have stood the test of time through the history of the Church and Western civilization, he said. We seek to develop in our students the ability to take those principles and, in a logical and rational way, apply them to the modern situation and to the issues they will face in their own lives. The College, Mrs. Smith graciously responded, is producing citizens of the world who are able to think on their feet and able to think critically.
Dr. McLeans recent appearance on From the Median, was his second in the last month. On the November 21, 2014, episode, he discussed the Colleges ongoing battle against the HHS contraceptive mandate.
